Plants with genetic modifications in the DNA of their chloroplasts

Plant cells contain chloroplasts, cell organelles responsible for photosynthesis. These chloroplasts contain their own DNA which is separated from the cell's nuclear DNA. In transplastomic plants, the DNA in the chloroplasts has been genetically engineered. Since only the nuclear DNA is inherited, the genetic modification in the chloroplasts will not be passed on to the next generation. Therefore, transplastomic plants may be a solution for ensuring biocontainment.
